ABOUT

Who is CrossFit Fort Meade?

Crossfit Fort Meade is a military non-profit Crossfit affiliate operating on base in central Maryland. We’re about halfway between Washington and Baltimore. We’re run by a small group of dedicated trainers who donate their time to provide the highest possible quality training to our members. We have approximately 10-15 Level 1 certified trainers (depending on deployments) and our volunteer staff also has specialty Crossfit certifications in Running/Endurance, Gymnastics, Kettlebells, Olympic Weightlifting, Football and Mobility.

We started training on an empty basketball court and moved around for months after that, often training outside year round. We’re currently in a reconditioned armory and its surrounding grounds. Our spaces and equipment have been improved from very humble beginnings by the hard work, dedication and devotion of our members and trainers. We’re constantly looking for ways to improve and are often in a state of ongoing renewal.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program based on functional exercises executed at high intensity. This is accomplished by constantly varied, non-isolation movements that genereally fall into three broad categories:

- Weightlifting. This is not the weightlifting you generally find in weight rooms and LA Fitness. You won’t find any cables, machines or weights that travel in a fixed path. What you WILL find are proven, fundamental movements such as the deadlift, squats, presses and Olympic weightlifting techniques. These are completely safe when performed correctly and yield benefits completely out of proportion to their simplicity.

- Gymnastics. Crossfit incorporates a high amount of basic bodyweight movements such as pushups, unweighted squats, pullups and ring work. If that sounds unrealistic, don’t worry. It’s daunting for everyone at first. At Crossfit Fort Meade our trained, certified staff can guide you through progressions that will get you where you want to go no matter where you start.

- METCON. Short for metabolic conditioning, METCON refers to training your body and system to respond to increased aerobic and anaerobic demands for increasingly longer periods of time. This is commonly and erroneously referred to as “cardio” but it’s more accurately termed High Intensity Interval Training. We do this several ways; rowing, running, jumping rope and plyomterics to name a few.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.
The needs of athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Both terrorist hunters and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.
